Cardiovascular Disease: Better Care by Reducing Risk

Cardiovascular disease (CVD)—encompassing coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, and related conditions—remains the leading global cause of morbidity and mortality with a projection of 23 million deaths annually by 2030.  For generalists and cardiologists alike, staying at the forefront of prevention, early detection, and effective management strategies is essential. This NCD Academy Course aims to enrich clinical proficiency using evidence-based guidance and dynamic, interactive learning focused on reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

As frontline healthcare professionals, you are uniquely positioned to reduce the burden of CVD through timely identification of modifiable risk factors, addressing them with informed therapeutic decisions, and effective patient engagement. This course integrates epidemiology, risk stratification, and guideline-driven management—including recent developments in hypertension, diabetes and obesity.

Beyond risk using estimation tools like the Framingham Risk Score to quantify CHD risk, guiding both lifestyle and pharmacologic intervention, we will consider innovative therapies, such as SGLT-2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists. Case-based scenarios will highlight how to tailor care—focusing on individual risk profiles, preferences, and social determinants of health.

Embedded throughout are actionable learning points aligned with ACC Guidelines, encouraging healthcare professionals to collaborate within multidisciplinary teams to optimize outcomes. Whether diagnosing early hypertension in primary care or initiating lipid therapy after myocardial infarction, risk reduction is key to treating cardiovascular disease.
