A unique glimpse in A&E at Croydon University Hospital during the Covid-19 pandemic

In this unique BBC report, filming staff are allowed cameras in the Croydon University Hospital's Emergency Department.

The report shows us several patients seriously affected with Covid-19, and covers some of the key issues around staffing and morale.

Staff have noticed that in this second wave, there seems to be a higher prevalence of younger patients. Interviews with consultants in Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine also cover the following important points:

  • The idea Covid-19 does not seriously affect younger patients is a myth: staff have seen patients in their 30s and 40s admitted to ITU and dying due to severe Covid infection

  • Covid is a multisystem inflammatory disease: a case study is provided of a 32-year-old man who suffered with Covid-related heart failure who has no other past medical history or co-morbidities

  • Croydon's bed occupancy is approximately 50% due to Covid

  • Staff fatigue is high, and morale is low. Concerns regarding staff well being were present from the first wave, and seem to be more pronounced now
